Lot 1777		1873 $20 Liberty. Open 3. NGC graded MS-61. Very frosty for this Open 3 variety. The shift from the Closed 3 to Open 3 dates in all denominations in 1873 was due to the following criticism by A. Louden Snowden, Chief Coiner, addressed to James Pollock, Director of the Mint, dated January 18, 1873: "I desire in a formal manner to direct your attention to the 'figures' used in dating the dies for the present year. They are so heavy, and the space between each so small that upon the smaller gold and silver, and upon the base coins it is almost impossible to distinguish with the naked eye, whether the last figure is an eight or a three. In our ordinary coinage many of the pieces are not fully brought up, and upon such it is impossible to distinguish what is the last figure of this year's date. I do not think it is creditable to the institution that the coinage of the year should be issued bearing this defect in the date. I would recommend that an entire new set of figures avoiding the defects of those now in use, be prepared at the earliest possible day." (PCGS # 8967) . Estimated Value $2,100 - 2,200. Lot 1781		1875-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Bright and lustrous. Some typical bagmarks as expected with an area of slightly roughened surface near the date, possibly alloy impurity. Lot 1782		1875-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Untoned with apparent luster throughout the devices, left over from its short while spent in commerce. Most double eagles were kept in bank vaults. There were used as backing for deposits and private currency issues. West of the Rocky Mountains, gold circulated widely, however, since locals of the region disliked currency (paper money) enough to have it outlawed (PCGS # 8974) . Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,400. Lot 1783		1875-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded EF-45. Lightly toned, The brief use of the Type 2 design lasted from 1866 until 1876. This is a pleasing representative from the Carson Mint in Nevada. The mint struck quantities of gold and silver coins from locally mined bullion, although because Carson City was in competition with San Francisco Mint -- a more politically connected mint -- depositors were lured into sending much of their mine supply to San Francisco instead. Lot 1788		1876-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Untoned. Traces of luster remain within the devices. This issue's mintage figure of 138,441 pieces is the highest of any double eagle struck in the Carson City Mint. As such, it is a fairly easy coin to obtain in circulated grades with AU58 examples switching to the scarcer category. In Mint State, on the other hand, author Douglas Winter estimates that only 50-60 pieces exist. The surfaces are fresh-gold in color with modest, yet readily evident Prooflike tendencies around devices. Better than average strike and free of all but a few scattered abrasions, this coin should be of obvious importance to advanced Carson City connoisseurs (PCGS # 8977) . Lot 1790		1876-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. A golden orange example with fewer marks than usually encountered. The obverse is fairly bold in striking detail with complete if note razor-formed stars, but unlike many CC Mint twenties of this Type 2 period, the reverse is decidedly sharp in every detail with noticeable detail on the shield, the eagle�s plumage and tail. Mint luster is pleasingly bright for the assigned grade, as it possesses a frosted sheen. A peppering of small-size abrasions, which usually characterize the issue, seems almost entirely absent here, a major bonus for the astute buyer! Lot 1793		1878 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63 CAC Approved. An intensely lustrous example and of Premium Quality for the given grade. A gorgeous choice 63 of the optimum, one could almost add, hand-picked order. The extremely brilliant, lustrous surfaces show signs of mingled medium toning. Agreeably well struck to say the least for 1878, in fact fully so on hair and stars, eagle and shield, whereby something we believe should merit reference here. Pop 36; 8 in 64 (PCGS # 8985) . Lot 1797		1882-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Only 39,140 struck. Frosty and mostly untoned. The mintage of double eagles from this mint ceased after 39,140 pieces had been coined for calendar year 1882. As demand for coinage was very strong at the time of issue, virtually the entire year�s production was placed into circulation by the owners who claimed their coins from the mint. Where these heavy gold coins served their intended purpose, nicks and scratches abound. Finding Carson City double eagles from this period without heavy bagmarks takes a great deal of hard work, with choice AU58 pieces representing enough of a challenge all by themselves. Here is a coin which defines attractiveness in all its aspects. For the Carson City or double eagle specialist, this particular coin would represent a prime acquisition which will certainly be a highlight or a conversation piece in any advanced collection. Lot 1799		1883-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Only 59,962 minted of which merely 1,540 examples are estimated to have survived. Frosty and choice. While one of the more available Carson City issues in lower grades, all CC Double Eagles are scarce and challenging to acquire in strict AU58 condition. This is a solid example, with original surfaces, only light abrasions, and nearly full luster, along with lovely vivid-gold color. The 1883-CC has a surprisingly high survival rate for a frontier era gold coin. Pop 306; 96 finer (PCGS # 8999) . Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400. Lot 1800		1883-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. Plenty of sparkling mint luster remains. With the 1884-CC, the 1883-CC is one of the more available Carson City issues in lower grades; the contrary applies to all CC Double Eagles in being rare and worthwhile coins higher conditions such as this attractive AU58 specimen. The 1883-CC has a high rate of survival estimated at 900 to 1,000+ coins extant, which is unusual for a frontier era gold coin. The original production was just 59,962 pieces. A few Mint States are reported. This offering, therefore, would seem to represent a significant opportunity for the well-heeled collector of Carson City Mint gold (PCGS # 8999) . Since few Uncirculated pieces survive, this lends added importance to those that approach Mint State quality such as AU58. This vibrant, shimmering representative is modestly abraded for the grade and mintmark, and shows only the slightest interruption of luster on the highpoints of the obverse. While this date tends to be available in the lower grades of Uncirculated, this is one of the few MS63 pieces we have offered at auction in the last few months. A sharply struck example, it has bright gold mint luster with a couple of tiny abrasions on the cheek, which account for the assigned grade. Close to 50% luster coverage on the obverse and more than this on the finely detailed reverse where any faint circulation rub is blocked by the fancy eagle design. Lot 1817		1894 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely golden toning and a choice one from a group of MS63 and MS64 twenties consigned by a gentleman from the Southwest. The Double Eagles of 1850 to 1933, whose net gold content is .9675 of an ounce, actually weigh more than an ounce when you factor in 10% copper alloy make them durable in circulation, limiting damage. Lot 1823		1894-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63 CAC Approved. Delicately toned with good eye-appeal and shimmering frost. A well struck coin from the 1890s decade, one in which, oddly enough, gold market panics gyrated back and forth across the US, England and Europe. It got so bad in 1894-95 the the US Treasury was in danger of breaking below its required gold bullion reserve requirement. The powerful banker, J.P. Morgan kindly informed the Treasury Secretary that the law allowed the Treasury to issue gold bonds (IOUs) to acquire the needed supply of the metal. Which was done, thus lessening the market-upsetting conditions. This handsome 1894-S Twenty stands as mute testominy to that long-forgotten crisis in American monetary history (PCGS # 9026) .
